Preparing the Pool Area for Guests

Hosting guests around a pool is one of the pleasures of ownership, and a little preparation makes gatherings more enjoyable and safer. Guests may not know the pool, its depths or its rules, and the pool area may need adjustment to handle more people than usual. Preparing in advance helps everyone relax.

Clean and check the pool

A clean pool with balanced water sets the stage. Cleaning the pool and deck a day or two before the gathering allows time to address any problems. Checking that equipment is running properly avoids surprises during the event.

Arrange the space

Guests need places to sit, set down drinks and food and change. Arranging furniture to create gathering areas, shaded spots and clear paths https://www.pinterest.com/waveoutdoorspools/ helps. Keeping the area around the pool edge clear reduces tripping and splashing onto seating.

Plan for food and drink

Food and drink are best kept away from the pool edge. A designated serving area on the deck or nearby patio keeps spills and debris away from the water. Using unbreakable dishes and cups near the pool is a sensible precaution.

Set expectations

Guests may not know the pool's layout, depths or the household's rules. Sharing these at the start of the gathering helps everyone enjoy the pool responsibly. Rules might cover running on the deck, diving, glass near the pool and supervision of children.

Designate a water watcher

Supervision is essential when guests swim, especially children. Designating an adult to watch the water, and rotating that responsibility during long gatherings, ensures someone is always paying attention. The watcher should avoid distractions while on duty.

Check safety features

Before guests arrive, checking that gates close and latch properly, alarms are working and safety equipment is accessible helps. Knowing where safety equipment is located and how to use it is important for the host.

Prepare for comfort

Towels, sunscreen, shade and water to drink help guests stay comfortable. Providing a place for guests to change and store belongings keeps the area tidy.

Plan for evening

If the gathering will continue into the evening, lighting helps guests move safely and enjoy the space. Checking lights before the gathering ensures they work.

After the gathering

After guests leave, cleaning the pool and deck, checking equipment and securing the pool area restores it for normal use. Noting what worked well and what could be improved helps plan future gatherings.
